The Joey Avocado is a cold-hardy variety well-suited for South Alabama, but it still needs protection from freezing temperatures. Growing it in a large container allows you to move it to a sheltered spot when temperatures drop below freezing. Keep it in full sun during the warmer months, and when cold weather arrives, bring it into a garage, sunroom, or other protected area. If left outside, wrap the trunk, mulch the base, and cover it with frost cloth for added insulation.
